Delivering better health care for and with people with intellectual disability

Abstract

In all age groups, people with ID experience a higher prevalence of health conditions. These can either be associated with their disability or be direct or indirect consequences of the ID. Such health conditions are often multiple and complex and may include sensory impairment and epilepsy, physical illness or disability as well as mental health and behavioural challenges. In order to understand and communicate their choices and preferences, people with ID (and their carers) may require support.

Tracey will speak about the establishment, evaluation and functions of the NSW intellectual disability health network and three pilot health teams under NSW Health. This work has included co-design with consumers, carers and clinicians alongside the development of a  resource pack and self – assessment  toolkit for health services to support them deliver health services for people with intellectual disability.

Tracey Szanto is the Manager of the Intellectual Disability Health Network at the Agency for Clinical Innovation, a pillar of NSW Health. Her role includes working with clinicians, consumers and managers to design and promote better healthcare for people with intellectual disability.
